In the Middle Ages, traveling actors put on religious plays.  The plays were taken from stories in the bible.  One of the plays told about the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived.  The actors needed to decorate the stage for their play.  They cut down a fir tree and hung apples on the branches.  apples were rare in those days.  it was special to see a decorated tree.  People wanted such a symbol in their homes.  They cut down small evergreen trees and brought them inside.  The children hung fruit on the branches.  Gradually, more and more decorations were placed on the trees.  Candles were used.  They symbolized Jesus as Light of the World.  A star was usually placed on top of the tree.  Because the Wise Men followed a star to Jesus' manger, the star reminds people of Jesus' birth.
