There was a real person named Saint Nicholas.  He was born in the Middle East hundreds of years ago.  he became a priest and looked after poor children and orphans.  After he died, Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of students, children, and sailors.  Several countries in northern Europe celebrate Saint Nicholas Day on December 6.  Saint Nicholas is said to roam the country.  he wears a flowing cape and miter.  Saint Nicholas gives out gifts to good children from a bag he always carries.
